I Am a Killer Arrest And Trial

Black fled to Oklahoma but was soon captured on suspicion of murder. Based on Lawson’s statement, police had also revealed an empty knife sheath in his car and the deadly weapon from a cemetery near where Johnson was attacked.

Investigators also discovered that Lawson’s claims Johnson had tried to engage with her inappropriately were false. According to court records, at trial, prosecutors argued Johnson’s murder resulted from Black’s “race-based reaction” after hearing Johnson made a pass at Lawson. However, Black and Lawson are white, and Johnson is Black.

The defense claimed Black sought to injure Johnson, not kill him. Therefore, making him regretful of second-degree murder or unforced voluntary manslaughter. Black was convicted for his first-degree murder in two different trials. However, he eventually avoided the death penalty.
